The sheer grandeur of the palace and the gardens of Versailles is captivating. It was our last day in Paris and I managed to grab a group of students and take the train outside the city walls to visit the grounds for a short morning visit.
Of course, the short morning visit quickly turned into an all day affair as I meandered through the maze of the gardens well into dusk. Versailles is a place to escape to a fantasy world routed in the history of a time without limits.
As I wandered the stone-strewn paths I began to notice at my feet tiny pieces of beautiful marble and stone. As I held them in my hands, I couldn't help but imagine that these small stones were fragments of ancient sculptures lost forever to the passing of time.
The air in Versailles is filled with history. Simultaneously in awe and disgust with the unending opulence, I found myself lost in thought about what life must have been like for Louis, Marie, and conversely, all the men and women who built such a majestic place.
